Description: Origination Manager, ProductionThe Lancet, Camden, LondonSalary – competitive and dependent on experienceThe Role:The Lancet is looking for an Origination Manager to oversee its team of Production Editors. The role involves responsibility for the high quality, on-time make-up of all pages for The Lancet journals and for the maintenance of The Lancet publishing system.Your Responsibilities:Staff management, productivity, efficiency and growthProvide leadership and maintain high morale within the production group. Conduct Personal Development Planning meetings (PDP) with team. Organise training where applicable. Manage holiday and time off. Recruit and train staff in consultation with the Head of Production. Hold regular 1 to 1 meetings with direct reports and frequent meetings with key staff, Head of Production and Editorial as appropriate. Allocate journal production work and take responsibility for ensuring cover across the team as appropriate.Production of high quality, timely publicationsSet and achieve quality standards for all staff, implement quality checks and monitor procedures to ensure quality standards are routinely met. Provide feedback where necessary. Work closely with the Art & Logistics Manager and the Head of Production to monitor schedules and ensure deadlines are met. Contribute with hands-on production of the journals as and when required.Publishing System MaintenanceProvide ongoing support to users of Smart Connection (The Lancet publishing system) for editorial and production teams: troubleshoot technical issues (in partnership with the IT Helpdesk and system integrator); maintain database (user names and permissions, archiving); manage and update training documents for new members of staff; organise software purchases.Template managementProduce and maintain templates and style guides for The Lancet journals.Essential Criteria: Interpersonal Skills: Ability to manage peopleAbility to work on own initiativeAbility to adapt and work effectively with a variety of situationsAbility to motivate and delegateExcellent verbal and written communication skillsExcellent organisation and prioritisation skillsGeneral Knowledge and Technical Skills: Excellent knowledge of InDesign Understanding of 4 colour printingDesired Criteria:Knowledge of either QPS/Copydesk or Smart Connection/InCopy an advantageJournal publishing knowledge an advantageBenefits:We do our utmost to ensure that working at Elsevier is as rewarding as it is enjoyable and challenging.
